The restored kiva in the Pueblo of Kuaua (ca. 1300) contains now-historic replicas of painted murals, the originals of which are widely considered to be among the finest examples of pre-contact art in North America. The New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs contracted with Crocker to perform a comprehensive assessment and present an outline strategy for treatment. The assessment included an analysis of the surrounding soils, characterization of the plasters and paint, and a structural evaluation of all elements in the kiva. Recommendations included installing a redundant interceptor drain and non-invasive underpinning of the failed walls.
